The Commander's Manifesto

What Is Commander?

Commander — also known as EDH (Elder Dragon Highlander) — is the most beloved multiplayer format in all of Magic: The Gathering. Three to five practitioners gather around the table. What unfolds is part politics, part chaos, and wholly personal. Your deck is your grimoire. No two are ever alike. Each player begins at 40 life. The ritual proceeds clockwise until only one mage remains standing. Such is the way of the coven.

The Command Zone

Every grimoire is bound to a single legendary creature — your Commander. They dwell in the Command Zone, a sacred liminal space beyond the battlefield, and may be cast whenever you have enough mana to summon them. Should your Commander be slain or exiled, you may recall them to the Command Zone instead of sending them to the graveyard or exile. Each subsequent summoning costs 2 additional mana — this is the Commander Tax. Pay it willingly, for even the greatest beings must answer to the laws of magic. Your Commander's color identity — the hues woven into their mana cost and oracle text — governs every card permitted in your grimoire. Deviate, and the pact is broken.

Crafting Your Grimoire

A Commander grimoire holds exactly 100 cards — your Commander plus 99 companions. Every non-basic land card appears just once. This is the Singleton Pact, and it is law. A well-balanced formula looks something like this: · 35–38 LANDS — the ley lines powering your craft · 10–12 RAMP — mana rocks and earth-callers (Sol Ring, Cultivate) · 10–12 CARD DRAW — engines to keep your hand full · 8–10 REMOVAL — targeted banishment and board-clearing curses · 3–5 PROTECTION — wards, counterspells, and hexproof equipment · 2–3 WIN CONDITIONS — your killing stroke, your grand invocation · SYNERGY CARDS — the spells that make your strategy sing The careful mage balances these elements like ingredients in a potion.

Table Politics

Commander is a coven, not a duel. With three or more opponents circling the altar, raw power alone won't save you. You must read the room, forge temporary pacts, and know precisely when to strike. A few forces worth knowing: ARCHENEMY — the player everyone has silently agreed to deal with first. KINGMAKING — lending your power to crown one player over another. Choose wisely, for your choice echoes beyond the game. THREAT ASSESSMENT — the most crucial skill at the table: who wins if left unchecked? The sharpest mages read the table as fluently as they read their own hand. Sometimes the greatest power is knowing when not to use it.

Power Levels & the Bracket System

The most harmonious rituals happen when all grimoires are tuned to the same frequency. The official Bracket System helps calibrate expectations before you sit down: BRACKET 1 — Precon / jank. Thematic, unoptimized, gloriously chaotic. BRACKET 2 — Focused. Good synergies, but no infinite loops or degenerate combos. BRACKET 3 — Optimized. Sharp interaction and efficient engines. BRACKET 4 — cEDH. Fully competitive. Fast combos, maximum ruthlessness. Always commune with your circle before the first card is drawn. Bringing a Bracket 4 grimoire to a Bracket 2 table is a swift path to exile from the coven. Respect the balance, or face the consequences.

The Five Schools of Magic

There are five schools of magical tradition. Your Commander's color identity is your chosen path. ☀ WHITE — Edicts, lifebinding, and divine law. Wins through order and attrition. 💧 BLUE — Counterspells, card draw, and time manipulation. Wins by knowing everything. 💀 BLACK — Necromancy, sacrifice, and efficiency above all. Wins through ruthlessness. 🔥 RED — Haste, direct damage, and chaos. Wins by moving faster than thought. 🌿 GREEN — Ramp, enormous creatures, and raw power. Wins by drowning you in mana and muscle. Most Commanders draw from multiple schools. Their identity is a fusion — a sigil uniquely their own. Choose your path wisely, initiate.
